Southmoreland Taxes To Triple Over Next Three Years

Southmoreland School District will need to almost TRIPLE your school tax over the next three years to deal with the $10 million dollar tidal wave budget shortfall it will be facing…. Watch the video!Southmoreland School District has a very serious spending problem.  The current school tax rate for Upper Tyrone is 14 mills.  It will take an extra 25 mill tax increase to meet the $10 million dollar budget shortfall that will hit in the next three years.  Your taxes will almost triple!

But it’s for the children.”  Yeah right.  While the traditional 6th grade overnight field trip to Laurelville was cut to save money, teachers got a collective $991,000 raise over the last three years.  Retirees got $4 million in bonuses over the same time period.  (Exactly how do retired teachers earn a bonus?)

So how about raising ticket prices for the games?  NO NO cries the administration!  The residents cannot afford that.  Oh, but we can magically afford to have our taxes skyrocket?

Take Action! Come to the school board meeting at 7:00PM on May 24 at the Middle School cafeteria, Scottdale campus.  Support Ken Alt and Dr. Catherine Fike in their struggle to rein in spending and keep the school districts hand out of your wallet!  Pass the word to friends, family and neighbors!!

  1. They didn’t hear YOU! On 5/24/12, Directors Beistel, Kauffman, Love, Miller, Pawlikowsky, Rhodes and Bentz voted to INCREASE your taxes. Directors Alt and Fike, voted AGAINST a tax increase. At the voting meeting on 6/27/12, 7:00pm., Middle School Cafeteria, Directors will vote on the final budget. If you cannot afford another tax increase, come out to the meeting and tell your elected representatives to take the tax increase out of the budget and vote, ‘NO’, to a tax increase!
